Day in the life of a Software Engineer: Life of Luba : “How To Get Internships At Top Tech Companies – www.lifeofluba.com/internship hey YouTube! I work as a software engineer and here’s my typical day. “

What does a Software Engineer do?

Software Engineers work on developing new software, maintaining existing software or deploying/supporting existing systems. An Internship/Apprenticeship can involve gaining hands-on experience working within a company and time at college.

What are the daily tasks of a Software Engineer?

  • Solving problems and debugging issues with the software you or someone else has written.
  • Writing documentation or reading documentation.
  • Writing code.
  • Team meetings
  • Code Reviews

How do I get into this career?

Just start learning. The best way to become a developer is to actually sit down at a computer and start programming. Your first program will most likely fail, but then you will learn how to overcome it and learn why it didn’t work. The best language to start would be python as it is the easiest to learn for a beginner.

Qualifications

If you enjoyed a day in the life of a software engineer and are now potentially considering becoming one, the next thing you have to worry about is whether you need a degree or some sort of qualification to become one.

So to put it in short, no you do not need any qualifications to become a software engineer and I know this is 100% true as I personally did it my self. When I left school I only had a few GCSEs, and somehow managed to get a job as a software engineer only a few months down the line.

If you want to get a qualification in software development then you absolutely can and will potentially boost your chances of becoming one, but there are other ways than just a degree at a university. There are hundreds of online courses now offering to teach you for free in most cases and will almost always result in a certificate at the end. These are great as you are not only learning along the way, but also are ending up with something to prove that you have taken time out of your spare time to become knowledgeable in software development.

While software development is 90% all about writing amazing code, there is the 10% that isn’t so fun. This is where these courses also come in great, they teach you the 10% while learning how to write code and make it fun and easy for most people.

When I mean anyone can do it, I mean anyone can do it: From unemployed mother to software engineer in seven months.

The average salary for a software engineer is around £36,000. But that doesn’t mean you cant earn more. Engineers at Facebook and Bloomberg LP are making upwards of £60,000 for your average employee.
