What did your path look like to become a voice actor?

My path was a long and bumpy road. I first started in 2007. I bought a microphone and tucked myself away in my walk-in closet surrounded by blankets and clothes to make it sound as best as it could. I then searched on Google, Craigslist and other sites to find information and work. I made connections with anyone who was in the industry in my town, then realized the power of the internet and how you can work remotely with modern technology. I learned everything I could about the industry and worked for free at the beginning to learn the ropes and what it takes to be a successful voice actor.

I worked a couple of day jobs while trying to get my voice over career off the ground. Lots of lonely nights and sacrifices were made to get my work done at my day jobs and also work at night to get my voice over work done. I eventually started building my voice over business and marketing and creating online content. Reaching out to potential customers/ad agencies, animation companies, etc… until I slowly got a handful of clients and could make enough money doing voice over and quit my day job(s).

Did you always know what you wanted to do from a young age or was it through trial and error that you discovered your love for voice acting?

I ALWAYS knew I wanted to do something in entertainment. The acting was the one thing that I never got tired of. I did a lot of plays in school and was constantly creative. It’s a love of mine. On-camera work was awesome, but I didn’t want to be a cliche actor and move to L.A.  So, voice-over was more convenient and I absolutely fell in love with it.

What inspires you?

Lots of things inspire me. Other actors, other people in my life. My kids inspire me. They go about life with a pure mentality. They do things without thinking. They love things because they love things, there’s no false agenda. Music inspires me, athletes, people who make sacrifices for others for the sake of wanting to better their lives. The list goes on and on.

What top 3 nuggets of wisdom can you pass onto someone starting in your industry?

1. Just get into it. Don’t ask a million questions. Google and YouTube are your best friends. Get the answers on your own. The more time you waste planning what to do, you’ll fail.

2. GET A VOICE OVER COMMERCIAL COACH.

3. Work your ass off and have a business plan

What do you credit most to the success of your voice acting career?

Persistence. Just keep swimming. Get knocked down, get back up and keep moving. It’s a marathon, my friend. Everyone is so worried about being famous. Just be YOU and be good.
